People often get scared when they hear us talk about ‘IT’ – worried that they will have to be a tech savvy genius building the actual code or looking into what’s happening in the back end of systems. With the Business Test Analyst role this isn’t the case at all – it has much more to do with consumer behaviour and user experience rather than with the technical aspect of testing.
Similar but less technical than our software test analyst role, FDM Group offers a graduate training pathway that develops trainees to successfully work on projects with our clients as Business Test Analysts, often also known as Business Testers or Business Test Engineers.
But what does a Business Test Analyst actually get to do on a daily basis? Business Test Analysts assess how a system or application meets the usability criteria of an end user or customer. As a Business Test Analyst you must have the ability to adopt the mind-set of an end user and to think about how well a product meets the needs of that person. Business Test Analysts are also expected to have strong interpersonal skills in order to effectively communicate with employees across various departments, ranging from key business stakeholders to technologists.
We expect Business Test Analysts to be analytical individuals who can “think outside the box”. From identifying issues in the usability of systems to creating new solutions that meet client needs, Business Test Analysts should have a passion for technology coupled with a business mind-set. Therefore, Business Test Analysts don’t need coding knowledge, but rather to have a keen eye for detail, strong problem solving skills and the ability to immediately identify client needs.
Once you start the FDM Graduate Programme and are well on your way to become a Business Test Analyst you will get the opportunity to work on a wide range of exciting projects with our prestigious client base. Working on HSBC’s mobile banking application is one prime example!
The broad range of projects and quality training received in this role allows you to either progress into a more technical role or continue to develop your business skills in business analyst or programme management roles, depending on your preference. For example, a mobile banking app may have a function with the relevant software allowing users to pay bills, however, if in order to access the final payment screen, you need get through seven different pages, this will not be the most efficient and user-friendly process. This is simply one example of what a Business Test Analyst would be looking for – identifying issues with the product that could lead to users perceiving it as ineffective and switching to a competitor’s app with a more streamlined process.
