Reston is an edge city in Fairfax County, Virginia that was founded in 1964. Recently, the city has flourished with developments, both business and residential. The most notable of these is the Reston Town Center, which offers several dining and entertainment options to its residents and visitors alike. Traveling around this little-big town is easy with several local bus routes, as well as the Metro Silver Line that runs trains out of the Reston Station and Wiehle-Reston East station that gets you to D.C. in about half an hour. Easy methods of transportation make it a central residential and business area, with many apartment and condominium complexes to choose from.
With three museums to choose from, art connoisseurs are in their element. Reston Museum delves into the past of the first ever post-war community established in the United States. Lake Anne Plaza, which is located near the Town Center and often referred to as the “heart and soul” of Reston, is usually occupied for local events, festivals and farmers’ markets. Catch a movie at Bow Tie Cinemas or watch the Washington Nationals play at Nationals Park.
Reston gives its history a modern twist in architecture especially. Spectators of this type of art can see this in the modern style of architecture at the Dulles International Airport, located minutes from the center of Reston. With the city being so close to D.C., it has boomed in terms of tech as well, with the headquarters of several technology-based businesses including Verisign and Clarabridge claiming posts in Reston.
Food and fun go hand in hand
Reston is a food lover’s dream, featuring many local restaurants. Visit the long-running local restaurant Clyde’s of Reston to try one of their American Farmhouse cheese samplers or Maryland Day Boat scallops. Although Reston has a variety of watering holes and bars, you need not travel far for a high quality glass of wine. A local favorite, Barcelona Wine Bar Reston, provides Spanish small plates and modestly priced glasses of wine with nothing less than a perfect patio to sit with a charcuterie plate or enjoy a classy brunch with friends. Check out Carpool, a vintage-themed pool hall less than two miles from the Town Center, with memorabilia that will take you back decades. Stop by The Conservatory, a swanky lounge located in the lobby at the Hyatt Hotel on Presidents Street or Breakers Sky Lounge in nearby Herndon to satisfy your dancing itch with live DJ sets.
Winter, spring, summer or fall
Reston is above all else a beautiful city and a wonderful place to enjoy the outdoors, no matter the season. Lake Fairfax Park is the perfect place to cool off on a hot Virginia summer day, with an outdoor swimming pool complete with a lazy river, because you can never have too many swimming options. The park offers picnic areas, hiking trails and a playground. This city cares about going green and shows it with sponsored bicycle programs such as the Capital Bikeshare program. During colder months, the Reston Town Center even converts to an outdoor ice rink.
Reston will give you a homegrown feel, but keep you as entertained as the city life. This revitalized location is just one of the exciting cities where FDM consultants receive training before being placed with our clients around the US.
