From the Military to a Commercial Career: Top 5 Transferable Skills

Feeling unsure about leaving the military? Don’t think you have what it takes to succeed in the commercial world?

Here are 5 of the top attributes that our ex-forces (UK) and military veterans (US) at FDM have identified as essential transferable skills that are highly sought after amongst large organisations in the commercial world:

1. Leadership

Those with experience in the forces are faced with leadership opportunities from the very onset of their career – even at the lowest rank. The ability to effectively manage people and work in a diverse team is a skill which is in high demand by companies.

2. Teamwork

Everyone seems to add this term on their CVs, but what does teamwork really mean? You might be surprised but the close-knit environment and proven working relationships within the Forces lead to directly transferable teamwork skills! This includes knowing the team dynamic, identifying members’ strong and weak points and knowing how to utilise this to achieve the best results.

3. Flexibility

Dealing with change in a dynamic environment can be difficult. For military personnel, facing unexpected changes in a calm and effective manner is commonplace; this is exactly the type of experience and maturity employers are searching for in the fast-paced corporate world.

4. Communication

Communication is also a term used quite exhaustively, yet is absolutely fundamental. From basic grammar and punctuation to dealing with highly technical teams or briefing the management board, these are daily challenges military personnel are used to.

5. Problem solving

An analytical individual who actively tries to find solutions rather than just problems is highly sought after. Military personnel are trained to overcome obstacles often in pressured environments which will directly benefit large organisations.

The above attributes are proof that the military provides a great foundation for preparing individuals with skills that are essential in the commercial world. As a matter of fact, it’s argued that interpersonal skills can ultimately be the deciding factor whether you get hired or not!

So regardless of whether you’re still in the military or you have already left and are actively looking for a job, don’t forget to recognise the skills you already have… they may just land you the perfect job.
