“I get to work with many different colleagues on many topics which means no two days are ever the same. I joined FDM because I believe in the business model, which is important to me as it gives me a sense of purpose. I have approximately 20 years’ experience working within L&D functions as a trainer/course designer. Before joining FDM I worked mainly in the financial services sector for organisations like Barclays, the Bank of England and the Co-operative Financial Services. I’ve even been a painter and decorator, which has come in very handy over the years. My role involves lots of training delivery which means I need to be able to flex my knowledge, experience and delivery style to suit a variety of courses or events. I need to study and deliver training content in short time frames; sometimes, on subjects I know little about. When I’m not delivering training, I’m either designing new courses, updating existing courses or in meetings discussing what the future courses could look like. What I enjoy most is the variety, the challenge and the people. One day I can be delivering a session to 60 colleagues as part of a Graduate Sales Recruitment training conference, and the next the day, I can be coaching someone on how to improve their interview or presentation technique.

Being able to make long-term friends from her time in the academy is one of Elizabeth’s favorite parts of FDM’s program. “FDM allowed me to put the theories that I learned in school into practice. Because of the projects and work I completed in the academy, I was able to show concrete application of my technical skills.” Elizabeth is currently introducing a lot of new functionality into her role at NYPIUA, where she has been aiding specifically in writing Java API’s and gets to see the changes she has implemented in production environments, allowing her to feel gratified and like an important part of the team.

“I would recommend FDM to anyone who is looking to make an entry into the finance industry and equip new skills in technology or project management. I believe FDM has to offer everything that is needed for fresh graduates to thrive in their professional lives.”

Therefore, Information Technology was a perfect career choice for him. After graduating and deciding to move to the unfamiliar New York City, Holland had no leads on jumpstarting his IT career before discovering FDM. “I think it is difficult to be taken seriously in the IT world as a young 20-something with minimal real world experience. FDM refined my technology and interviewing skills to the point that I felt confident interviewing with top-tier companies.” Holland says that FDM singlehandedly enabled him to access blue-chip companies, one of which he has now been placed with. As a Business Process Analyst at Apollo Global Management, he currently writes intricate Excel formulas and macros. This is something Holland was trained on entirely at FDM, regardless of his college background in IT. “I feel fulfilled knowing that I am the process owner of one of Apollo’s business functions. Although he graduated with this degree in 2016 from Indiana University, Jack still had little professional experience in the IT world. One of the biggest problems he had after college was that the typical employer took almost a month on average to reply back, only to find the position had been filled or the company needed someone with more experience. “This is when FDM really changed things for me, because every entry-level job I saw had these years of experienced required –which was crazy to me. FDM not only offered quality training in software development, but also connected me with quality opportunities at high-profile companies.” Jack joined FDM in January of 2018 and was placed with Charles Schwab a few short months later. At Charles Schwab, Jack evaluates software platforms, and with the help of FDM’s training in Java development, Jack now understands and quickly adapts to other languages like C# and .NET for testing purposes. FDM also taught him how to learn new technologies quickly and be able to produce on a consistent basis. “It’s not easy returning to work after a break. With many recruiters and potential employers it seemed that my years of experience didn’t count for anything as all they could see was the gap in my CV. FDM’s Returners Programme was just the opposite.
