Kick-starting Our Careers at FDM Beijing

Kick-starting Our Careers at FDM Beijing

Over the years, FDM’s global presence has grown with centres across Asia Pacific, Europe and North America. Pop-up Academies are set up as temporary centres for tech and business enthusiasts to launch their careers with FDM Group without having to travel too far to one of our flagship centres. One of these academies was in Beijing, China. Offering Business and Technology pathways, we interviewed four of our trainees about their experience in the academy so far.

What did you do prior to joining FDM?  在加入FDM之前你做了什么?

Freddy Xu

“I graduated from the University of Birmingham with an MSc in Investments with a specialism in Financial Modelling and Portfolio Management. During my degree, I learnt Python which I enjoyed and developed an interest in the FinTech industry.”

Freddy Xu, IT Service Management

Sophia Shi

“In 2018, I graduated from Northwestern University with a master’s in Integrated Marketing Communications. After completing my degree, I started looking for Business Analyst roles and FDM was the perfect opportunity for what I was looking for.”

Sophia Shi, IT Service Management

Antony Zhu

“I graduated in June 2019 with a double major in Applied Mathematics and Statistic-Data Science Track. As I came from a theory-based background, I lacked the practical experience with programming. I had experience with R and Python, which I learnt during my degree, but these aren’t robust enough to get myself into a career as a Developer.”

Antony Zhu, Software Development

Evelyn Jin

“I received my Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Maddison in the USA and it focused on Econometrics, so I gained lots of experience in data analysis, but only basic knowledge about programming and coding.”

Evelyn Jin, Software Development

Why did you join FDM’s Graduate Programme?  为什么你加入FDM畢業生训练课程?

“Initially, I thought it was a great opportunity to further my programming skills and fuse that with my finance knowledge, to help me develop my skills and make me more versatile.  As I began to find out more about FDM, I realised our values aligned. I knew that FDM could help me get onto my desired career path, gain project experience and add value to the team I get placed with.”

Freddy Xu, IT Service Management

“I was looking for a Business Analyst position in the technology industry at the time I came across FDM Group. I found that FDM provided the perfect opportunity for what I was looking for.”

Sophia Shi, IT Service Management

“Since I started searching for a job after university, I didn’t come across a company that stood out to me as an organisation who cared about their workers whilst offering ‘real training’ in coding and programming. I read into FDM Group and I realised this was the company that I could fit into.”

Evelyn Jin, Software Development

What’s the training like? 训练课程是怎样的?

“The training is led by experienced trainers with valuable IT experience. The training is comprised of a variety of modules including professional skills, UNIX, VBA, SQL, and more. You also learn about the project management lifecycle which will be important to know when on client site.”

Freddy Xu, IT Service Management

“The training in Beijing is like a Bootcamp for programming! We first learnt professional skills and were introduced to the basics of Java, and then it deep-dived into core Java. The training gave me a solid understating of what I need to learn to get into the industry. I’d recommend it graduates from a non-Computer Science major, looking to become a programmer.”

Antony Zhu, Software Development

“It was intense at times, but everything I have learned will be useful when I’m placed out on client site which is beneficial.”

Evelyn Jin, Software Development

What’s your favourite memory from the programme so far? 课程中最令你难忘的是什么?

“I enjoyed the UNIX module, as I had not done it before. I tried hard to master it, spending extra hours outside of training to understand it. I was very proud of being the only from my class to complete the UNIX project and I received a high mark!”

Freddy Xu, IT Service Management

“I’ve formed such a close friendship with my co-workers during training. We’ve worked together to help each other out and I know that we will all keep in touch with each other after being placed out on client site. I enjoyed all of the modules we learnt, however, what I loved the most was the atmosphere in the academy. All of our trainees are really hardworking, and the trainers are friendly.”

Sophia Shi, IT Service Management

“The first week of training when we learnt professional skills. The elevator pitch workshop really helped me gain my confidence.”

Antony Zhu, Software Development
