Ex-Forces Careers

Life at FDM

If you’ve left the forces and considering a new career, our Ex-Forces Careers Programme is the next step to bridge that gap. We recognise that people who have served in the Armed Forces have many transferable skills, ranging from adaptability and maturity through to responsibility and leadership, that are crucial to a successful career in the corporate world.

We are committed to supporting ex-forces personnel and providing a soft landing into the corporate world. Our programme has been awarded the gold medal by the MoD’s Employer Recognition Scheme, one of only 33 employers in 2017 to have received this honour.

The FDM Ex-Forces Programme is run by ex-service personnel and employs ex-servicemen and women from all ranks and across all three services.

Ex-forces consultant 1:

I had struggled initially on leaving the army. I thought it would be relatively easy, but it proved very difficult.

Ex-forces consultant 2:

The transition from something you know to something you don’t know is a troubling pathway to navigate through.

Ex-forces consultant 3:

I found working for an employer, when I’m out on my own, it’s very much sink or swim.

Ex-forces consultant 2:

Sometimes it’s nice to have someone to help you realise that choice that you’ve made; FDM did it for me.

Ex-forces consultant 4:

It’s pretty much the exact same as being in the Army but better.

Ex-forces consultant 5:

When I see people who are leaving the forces and looking for new opportunities the first place I point them is to FDM.

Ex-forces consultant 6:

FDM staff have been supportive during my training, out on site, and even beyond that.

Ex-forces consultant 3:

They’ve given me the platform to go into the civilian sector be confident, learn, be an asset to an employer.

Ex-forces consultant 1:

…and FDM’s really helped me get into somewhere a lot quicker than if I’d tried to do it on my own.

Ex-forces consultant 4:

Again, smooth transitioning from the Army to FDM, FDM to placement.

Ex-forces Consultant 6:

I have enjoyed my time here at FDM, their training was fantastic.

Ex-forces consultant 5:

They give you opportunities to go to clients and interview for different positions.

Ex-forces consultant 2:

You’re joining another family and the staff and the team that operate out of the Academy are always there for you.

Ex-forces consultant 3:

It’s a hundred percent whatever you put in you get out.

Ex-forces consultant 1:

CV’s, form of qualifications, interview techniques, door opening two-year contract and

Placements.

Ex-forces consultant 4:

you already have skills.

Ex-forces consultant 2:

I had the key I just didn’t know which door to put it in.

I’m now placed, I’m now earning money, and I’m gaining experience.

Ex-forces consultant 1:

It’s been absolutely brilliant for me and I wouldn’t be where I am today without FDM.

The CPS Programme ensures that when a new consultant is placed onsite, they are connected with a more senior FDM consultant already working with that client to help ease their transition. Cowan Botha, FDM Ex-forces consultant:

FDM was fantastic in helping myself and other injured servicemen and ex-forces personnel just realise that we have something to offer outside of the Military, that all the skills that we had gained over years and all the experience that we had was transferable and was something that companies within the corporate world were definitely looking for.

I’m really enjoying the responsibility of being able to hold my head up high as an ex-forces person and really tackle the job head-on.

Nickolas Pitfield, former Regional IT Support Manager at two major Swiss banks

FDM was fantastic in helping myself and other ex-forces personnel to realise that we do have something to offer outside of the military – that the skills and experience we have gained over the years are transferable and are something that companies in the corporate world are definitely looking for.
