At FDM, we’re proud to stand with those who have served. Since 2014, the FDM Ex-Forces Programme has supported over 1,000 service leavers and veterans start meaningful second careers after leaving the forces. Our consultants come from a wide range of service backgrounds—but they all bring with them the same dedication, resilience and leadership that defined their military careers.

To mark Armed Forces Week, we asked a group of our Ex-Forces Consultants: What are the top three skills you’ve brought from the military into your consulting career?

Their answers reflect not only the strength of their training but also the mindset and adaptability that continue to shape their success in the civilian world.

These stories are a reminder that leaving the military isn’t starting over—it’s starting with experience.

Karen Campbell

Former Royal Navy Medic → Project Manager, Government Department

As a medic, in the fast-paced environment of submarines, following procedures with absolute accuracy was critical—every decision carried real consequences. Lives depended on her ability to act methodically and without error, ensuring the highest standard of care in every situation. This allowed Karen to thoroughly assess problems, make informed decisions, and deliver precise, effective solutions.

Integrity

Karen took her responsibilities seriously, ensuring every task was carried out to the best of her ability. Every decision made was approached with ownership and careful consideration, knowing that the outcomes mattered. That same mindset drives her today, holding herself to a high standard in everything she does.

Adaptability

In fast-paced medical environments, she worked seamlessly across ranks, building trust and communicating effectively to get results. Her ability to connect with people, understand different perspectives, and adjust her approach ensured smooth collaboration, even in high-pressure situations. In consulting, these same skills help engage with diverse stakeholders, foster strong working relationships, and drive solutions that meet strategic objectives.

Karen says “FDM recognised my abilities, saw the value I could bring, and placed their trust in me. Their support has been unwavering, giving me the confidence to transition smoothly into my new career. I feel privileged to be part of FDM.”

Norman Yarwood

Former Warrant Officer, Royal Corps of Signals → Head of FDM’s Ex-Forces Programme, Scotland & Northern England

The value of teamwork

Norman learned from day one in basic training how much more a team can achieve than an individual; this holds in any environment.

Be willing to change

The military has an old saying that ‘No plan survives first contact’—also, true in the commercial world. Be adaptable, and willing to change—in other words, be Agile minded.

Know the value of how good your military training is

In his opinion, no commercial organisation will commit the time and money to training that the military will.

After 24 years in the Army, including time as a Regimental Sergeant Major, Norman now helps others navigate the transition to civilian careers. His experience on the front line drives his passion for building future leaders.

Sarah Gibb

Former Royal Air Force Musician → Digital portfolio manager

Sarah’s 22 years in the RAF taught her more than musical precision—they built her confidence, communication skills and the ability to manage competing priorities. She now leads complex digital portfolios with those same strengths.

Communication

Sarah gained confidence in her ability to advise and support senior staff and stakeholders when required.

Time management

She was able to prioritise tasks effectively and carry out additional duties alongside her primary role.

Teamwork

Sarah worked with others and learned how to combine her skills and strengths to accomplish successful outcomes.

Sarah says “FDM has been great in supporting and guiding me during my transfer from military to civilian life. They advised me on how to utilise my knowledge and skillset gained from my time in the military and adapt and apply them to fulfil my role as an FDM Consultant. Leaving the military can be a daunting experience but the Ex-Forces team put my mind at ease and helped me shift my focus on ways of working successfully.”

Kieran Macauley

Former Royal Marine Lance Corporal → Project Manager, Global financial institution

Adaptability

Due to the wide variety of situations and environments Royal Marines are expected to operate in, Kieran developed the ability to quickly adapt and adjust, being effective, in an ever-changing business environment.

Communication

Working as a signaller at Royal Marines HQ, Kieran liaised with diverse teams across a range of seniority levels and developed skills in effective stakeholder management.

Cross-functional collaboration

Having worked with teams who each had their unique role in achieving a shared military outcome, he developed the ability to understand how teams of varied skill sets can achieve successful business outcomes.

Kieran says “FDM has helped me build upon my military experience through training, coaching and placing me with clients where I can further develop.”
